The "Motown Sound"

Berry Gordy entered a music business that was segregated. There was "pop" music (white music) and there was "race music" (black music). Gordy's goal was to sell music to all people. The foundation of the Motown Sound would be pop music with a rhythm and blues edge. What Gordy created over the following years has become the "Sound Track for America"... The Motown Sound. Music that you hear 50 years later all over the world. You know it when you hear it. Young people are just as familiar with it today as they were 50 years ago. The staying power of the Motown Sound has never be equaled in music. The service mark for Motown in the early years was, "The Sound of Young America." This was not black or white music, this was to be American Music.
